A look around the Plaça de Catalunya in Barcelona. One of the main squares in the city. Full of fountains, statues and sculptures. Surrounded by old banking buildings. Plaça de Catalunya (pronounced [ˈplasə ðə kətəˈluɲə], meaning in English "Catalonia Square"; sometimes referred to as Plaza de Cataluña, its Spanish name) is a large square in central Barcelona that is generally considered to be both its city centre and the place where the old city (see Barri Gòtic and Raval, in Ciutat Vella) and the 19th century-built Eixample meet. Some of the city's most important streets and avenues meet at Plaça Catalunya: Passeig de Gràcia, Rambla de Catalunya, La Rambla, and Portal de l'Àngel, in addition to Ronda de Sant Pere, Carrer de Vergara, and Carrer de Pelai. The plaza occupies an area of about 50,000 square metres. It is especially known for its fountains and statues, its proximity to some of Barcelona's most popular attractions, and the flocks of pigeons that gather in the centre. On the right is the Banco Español de Crédito, S.A. (Spanish Credit Bank). Banesto (officially Banco Español de Crédito, S.A., "Spanish credit bank",) was a Spanish bank, 88.4% owned by the Santander Group. Banesto was the fifth-largest banking group in Spain, operating around 1,770 branches. Outside of Spain, it is known as the sponsor of a cycling team that featured Miguel Indurain, the first rider to win five consecutive Tours de France. Today's Movistar Team is the direct descendant of this team. In 2012, Banco Santander announced it would absorb Banesto. The building dates from 1942, and it is 38,56 m high.
